Laughing gas, the so-called nitrous oxide, N20 for short, is a non-allergenic, non-irritating gas that affects the central nervous system. It has been used successfully in medicine, especially for the treatment of patients with dental pphobia, for more than 150 years
A mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is sent through a small nasal mask. Your child can choose between different “magic air scents” such as bubblegum, orange, strawberry or grape. The concentration of laughing gas is individually tailored for your child and gradually increased until a pleasant and feeling of relaxation is created. This is achieved after only 2 to 3 minutes.
After completing the dental treatment, your child breathes in oxygen for a few more minutes until the laughing gas is no longer effective and can leave the practice without any impairment.
The nitrous oxide helps the child relax during the dental treatment, thereby reducing feelings of fear. Just like with fear, the feeling of pain also decreases. Your child will remain conscious and responsive during the treatment.
Patients describe the feeling of nitrous oxide sedation as
Nitrous oxide sedation is a very safe and low-complication process that is used millions of times worldwide. Since laughing gas is not metabolized by the body, but is completely exhaled, there are no complications. Very rarely nausea or slight dizziness can occur, which can, however, be reversed after switching off the nitrous oxide supply and by inhaling oxygen. Therefore, this method is also suitable for the dental treatment of children.
There are only a few contraindications that dismiss the usage nitrous oxide sedation. These include eye surgery (vitrectomy), nasal obstruction, ileus or pregnancy. Your dentist can clarify these in a preliminary consultation so that risks can be mitigated.
It is important that we know your state of overall well-being before the treatment! Therefore, please inform us about all medications you are taking, drugs, alcohol or sedatives and about existing diseases and surgeries undertaken.
It is recommended to take a light meal before the treatment and not to eat or drink about 2 hours before the appointment.
Nitrous oxide sedation is not suitable for pregnant patients. Pregnant women should not be in the treatment room during treatment.
The costs of nitrous oxide sedation depend on the duration of the dental treatment. In addition, your child gets their own nasal mask, the scent which they can choosebased on their preferances.
